Vishaal R Sapuram
Vishaal R Sapuram, a prodigious chitravina (fretless lute) artiste from the Indian classical (Carnatic) tradition, is the disciple of the renowned chitravina maestro Shri N Ravikiran. Identified as a child prodigy, Vishaal gave his first vocal concert at the age of nine, and soon thereafter began performing on the chitravina, amongst a rare few of his generation to take up this instrument. He has performed at many prestigious venues across India, as well as in Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Europe, and the USA. He has also performed with his guru Shri Ravikiran, Shri Abhishek Raghuram, and many other respected musicians, and has also played in many jugalbandis and fusion ensembles.
An A-grade artiste for All India Radio, Vishaal’s laurels include the Dr M S Subbulakshmi Fellowship from Shanmukhananda Sangeetha Sabha Mumbai, awards at the Music Academy Madras’s music season for four years, a music scholarship from India Fine Arts (Austin, USA), and so on. He has been teaching music since age ten and has also given several lecture-demonstrations and workshops. He has developed a system for notating Carnatic music on the computer that has been used in many music books. He holds Bachelor’s degrees in economics and Sanskrit and certificates in Tamil and business from the University of Texas (Austin, USA).
