Purandara Dasa(1484-1564) is often referred to as the "grandfather" of carnatic music. He invented "gitas", "Alankarams" and "Swaravalis" which can be used to teach a novice carnatic music. This is a practice that is still followed today. He also invented the ragam, mayamalavagowla.
